How To Say I Miss You In French

1. How to say I miss you in French 

This is the most obvious, and simplest way: 

• Tu me manques – I miss you

Unlike the English version,though, the French expression begins with “you” and ends with “I”.  The literal translation therefore is like  saying “you’re lacking to me”.

• Toi aussi tu me manques beaucoup – I miss you a lot

Another way to say ” I miss you in French is this: 

• Tu me manques déjà – I miss you already

You only say this one after the other person has just left. For example, you send them a text or chat a few hours after they boarded a train or got on the plane. 

This is how you respond to “I miss you/I miss you already”:

• Toi aussi tu me manques – I miss you, too! 

2. I Miss You and talking about coming back in French

When you miss someone, you just have to know when you’ll see them again, do you ask: 

• Dis, tu reviens quand?  – When are you coming back?

This is a sort of a subtle manner of telling someone you miss them. 

While this is how you respond: 

• Très bientôt, je te le promets  – Very soon I promise

If you miss someone so much that you just have to say that they should be back soon:

These are the kind of “I miss you” where you tell someone how exactly you feel about them not being around. 

These are ideal for those looking for more heartfelt ways to show how much they miss someone.

• Je ne suis pas bien sans toi –  translates literally to “I am not well without you”.

This is something that should be reserved for intimate relationships rather than friends or colleagues.

• Je veux que tu sois là –  I want you to be here 
• j’ai envie d’être avec toi – I want to be with you 
• J’ai les boules quand t’es pas lå –  I’m bummed when you’re not here / I’m upset when you’re not here. 
• J’ai une boule au ventre quand je pense à toi –  rough translation is “I have knots in my stomach when I think about you”. 
• C’est nul sans toi – it sucks without you

Here, the c’est nul part generally translates to “it sucks”. With this expression, you’re essentially telling the person you miss that life isn’t as good without them.

• Ton absence me pèse – your absence is a burden on me 

This comes off as a complaint rather than just “I miss you.”

This is also an expression you’d use to describe missing someone with whom you’re romantically involved.

• C’est pas pareil sayoutoi – it’s not the same without you.  

This is almost the same as “ton absence me pèse” in terms of how you see the world without that person you miss.

• Je ne suis pas bien sans toi –  I’m no good without you

This is kind of melodramatic and devaluing but others find it romantic. This is something usually heard from people in a romantic relationship.

5. I miss you and looking forward to seeing the other person again

When you miss someone and you know they will be back soon, it’s like you counting down the days until you see that person again. These are the ways to tell a loved one, family or friends that seeing them again is something you look forward to, 

• Je suis impatient de te voir – I’m looking forward to seeing you
• J’ai hâte de te voir – I’m looking forward to seeing you

6. I miss you and asking if you’ll see each other again soon

When you miss someone so bad, you just have to ask when you’ll see them again. There are a few different ways to say these ways to say “I miss you” in French, but they all basically mean the same thing. The only distinction is that some are somewhat more formal than others.

• On se reverra bientôt? – Will we see each other again soon?
• On se revoit bientôt? – Will we see each other again soon?
• On se verra bientôt? – Will we see each other soon? 
• On se voit bientôt? – Will we see each other soon? 

This one doesn’t have a “again,” but it’s unnecessary since the meaning is obvious. 

7.  I miss you and asking when you’ll see each other again soon in French

The following ways of saying “I miss you” in French are almost identical to the previous ones (in number 6). However, instead of wondering if you’ll see each other again, you:ll ask when. Note that the term bientôt (soon) is replaced with quand (when) in the following examples: 

• On se reverra quand ? – When will we see each other again ?
• On se revoit quand ? – When will we see each other again?
• On se verra quand ? – When will we see each other? 
• On se voit quand ? – When will we see each other?
