About the song
The band Cookie Dingler may only be a one-hit wonder but their song “Femme libérée” is now regarded as one of the most famous French songs of all time. It was released in 1984 and quickly became a hit in France, going on to become a well-known song over the following decades. Even though it was the band’s only hit, it went on to enjoy huge commercial success.
“Femme libérée” was one of the most popular songs to come out of France in the 1980s. It was written by Joelle Kopf and Christian Dingler. The song was made available for purchase as a single in July 1984.
The song was released by EMI Music and is considered to be one of the best when it comes to French pop.
The song “Femme libérée” was released during a period that was characterized by the proliferation of foolish songs that made fun of various prevalent topics in society at the time. Cookie Dingler produced a song in an era when the look is more important and determined if you are ‘in’ or “not.”
That same year the song came out, “Femme libérée” was awarded the Prix de la Union Nationale des Auteurs et Compositeurs, presented by the SACEM (Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de music). SACEM is a professional group in France that is responsible for collecting payments for artists’ rights and distributing those rights to the songwriters, composers, and music publishers who created the music in the first place.
The record was on the French Singles Chart (Top 50) for a total of 18 weeks. It reached number two, coming in only behind Peter and Sloane’s smash “Besoin de rien, envie de toi. ” It remained at number two for two consecutive weeks.
Then it fell out of the top ten altogether, having spent a total of ten weeks there. The SNEP awarded the single with the Platinum disc certification in 1985.
Over the years, the French classic “Femme libérée” was covered by various artists. These include Mireille Mathieu, Alain Souchon, and Julien Clerc who recorded the song for their album titled “Les Enfoirés” in 1988.
Then in 2005, the band Soma Riba featuring DJ Fou did their version of the song. However, they were unable to match the level of success achieved by the original. On July 4, 2005, this single only reached its highest position on the singles chart in France, which was number 33. It remained in the top 100 for a total of 16 weeks.

Femme Librée English Lyrics and Translation
She has a subscription to Marie Claire
She only reads Brétécher strips from the Nouvel Obs
She gave up pretending to read Le Monde for a long time now
She bought Paris Match in secret, that’s a lot more fun
Don’t let her down, she’s so fragile
To be a liberated woman, that’s not so easy, you know (x2)
In her bed, a macho is falling asleep.
He won’t love her beyond dawn.
But she doesn’t care, she’s having fun anyway,
and purrs tons of “I love you” in his ear.
She’s worried about her first wrinkle
The reflection of her mirror is weighing on her life
She sucks in her stomach each time she goes out.
Even in Elle they say you have to try hard.
She smokes a lot, she’s very opinionated
She likes to brag about being able to change a tire
She tells her age, and the age of her children
and even enjoys a little joint once in a while
